The infamous 'Recto University' isn't the only claim to fame this avenue has. In a small hut along what used to be called Calle Azcárraga, Andrés Bonifacio was born in 1863. He would grow up to lead the Katipunan, a secret revolutionary society he founded on the very same street the Thursday of Dr. José Rizal's exile in 1883. Through their flags, red became their color as demonstrated by their unyielding courage and the blood that spilled in their pursuit for independence. To this day, the spirit of rebellion is very much alive in this avenue as it is often the path taken by protesters as they rally their principles to the country's seat of power—the Malacañan.
