When Magellan first landed in Cebu way back on April 21, 1521, he planted a cross as a sign of gratitude for his safe arrival—with it, the seed of Christianity in the Philippines. His namesake, Magallanes Street, marks the spot where Rajah Humabon and Reyna Juana, together with their followers, were baptized to become the first Filipino Christians. Carbon, Cebu's oldest market rife with handcrafted instruments, souvenirs, and flowers, is connected by the street to Magellan's Cross and his gift to the royal family: the red regalia-clad Santo Niño residing in His Basílica Minore.
